This is a pivotal time in the seasonal calendar, and an African safari in March can have a strange end-of-days feel to it – not of foreboding, but of imminent change. Experience the last days of summer, warm days but cool nights, harvest season, migrating herds turning tail or baby animals being nursed…
Northern Tanzania safari in March
Don’t miss the climax of the wildebeest birthing season in the southern Serengeti – wobbly legs and bobbing heads start to turn northwards in search of fresh grazing as March draws to a close. Local predators make the most of the bonanza, and you can witness the best of the action – and fall asleep by ‘glamplight’ – by staying at one of the luxury, semi-permanent mobile camps that follow the herds on their ceaseless journey.
As luck would have it, two of Tanzania’s finest safari destinations, Lake Manyara & Tarangire National Parks, lie side by side in the Great Rift Valley. March sees the end of the dry season, with falling lake levels concentrating food sources – and no flamingo can resist being in the pink of health. Less graceful but equally compelling, the giants of Tarangire are also on the move, with huge herds of elephant making a time-honoured trek to the remaining water points in the parks.
