An African safari in April – essentially autumn in the Southern Hemisphere – offers some unique opportunities. Temperatures are starting to fall from their summer highs, but many of the best destinations don’t yet see the rise in visitor numbers that can occur later in the year, this, combined with off-peak prices can offer exceptional value and an opportunity to escape the crowds.
Greater Kruger safari in April
It’s mid-autumn now in the Greater Kruger area, which means the summer rains have been replaced by only the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. As a result, the bush, lush only two months before, is beginning to die back, and it gets easier to spot game and of course big cats, plus the migratory birds are still around. While days are still warm, the evenings are cool – ideal safari weather. Continue exploring…

Victoria Falls safari in April
The summer rains fully charge the mighty Zambezi and it roars over the lip of the falls, throwing clouds of spray high in the air and making it one of the best times to visit Victoria Falls. What goes up, must come down, nurturing a localised rainforest habitat and necessitating raincoats and umbrellas for this ‘surround sound and spray’ experience. Continue exploring…
Hwange safari in April
Hwange – an easy light aircraft hop from Victoria Falls – is at its most beautiful during April. There’s still greenery and vegetation to be had, but both are starting to run low. Game begins to congregate around Hwange’s famous waterholes, making for outstanding wildlife viewing: water levels go down; animal concentrations go up. Continue exploring…

Damaraland safari in April
April is an ideal time to visit Namibia, if you don’t mind the gap. The gap in question is one of seasonality – that is, between the hotter and therefore quieter summer months, and the cooler, more popular winter – so, in fact, there’s every reason to love it! The aesthetic appeal of Damaraland is only enhanced with fewer people present … there’s nothing quite like a deserted desert. Continue exploring…
Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater safari in April
Imagine seeing black rhino in an extinct volcano carpeted with yellow and purple flowers. That’s the prospect that awaits when you descend into Ngorongoro crater during April. Whilst this ‘off-season’ month with it’s sporadic, thundery downpours are enough to deter most visitors, travelling to East Africa at this time of year means you’ll only have to share the wilderness with the wildlife. Don’t be concerned about the odd muddy patch or bumpy roads in the central Serengeti; when you catch up with the wildebeest the money you’ll have saved by travelling out of the peak seasons could have you dancing in the rain.
