Africa is a unique and diverse continent, with many countries and a staggering array of wilderness areas, safari lodges and experiences. Combine this with African safari prices that literally change with the seasons, and it’s no wonder we’re frequently asked, ‘How much does an African safari cost?’.
At Art of Safari, we’ve created three safari categories, with various price ranges:
- Comfortable safaris*,
- Luxury safaris*, and
- Really high-end safaris*
*Note, prices are based on two people sharing, and they exclude international flights.
So, what are African safari prices? We give you the broad-strokes below, or you can click here to download our African safari price infographic.
Comfortable safaris
Comfortable safari prices range from about USD4,000–6,000 per person per week, depending on seasonality and travel arrangements. At the more lower end of the scale, they’re usually small group tours with set departure dates, travelling by vehicle and starting and ending in the same place … say, driving a loop from Nairobi, back to Nairobi, over six nights and seven days. At the higher end they’re more flexible, allowing for personalised trips travelling by road, by a mix of road and air, or by air throughout. Classic safaris include comfortable accommodation – often in somewhat larger camps – safari activities and good meals. While they don’t have the bells and whistles of luxury safaris, they offer a great safari experience at a more economical rate.

Luxury safaris
Typically, luxury-safari prices range from about USD6,000–9,000 per person per week depending on seasonality. They’re fully inclusive of luxury accommodation in intimate camps, gourmet safari dining, most drinks, safari activities, light-aircraft flights from place to place and more. Conveniently, you’ll need only open your wallet for optional extras like shopping or spa treatments (if at all). While some experiences may be on a shared basis (like game drives), everything else is fully customised to your exact specifications.

Really high-end safaris
Broadly speaking, really high-end safari prices range from about USD9,000–13,000+ per person per week depending on seasonality. These are fully inclusive of sumptuous accommodation where nothing is overlooked. Think highly personalised service, all safari activities (often with private guides), world-class food in private settings, premium drinks, light-aircraft flights from place to place and more. There’s almost no limit to high-end safaris, which can extend to luxury private villas with dedicated staff, personal guides and privately chartered planes and helicopters for transfers and exploring. The safari experiences themselves can be as exclusive as you can imagine, be it private dining on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, dedicated hot-air-balloon safari over Sossusvlei for two, or indeed anything you desire.
