Safaris are often perceived to be pricey, but worth it, and we’re delighted to tell you that more affordable African safaris do exist. These trips allow you to get to the heart of the wildlife action in breathtaking locations with great safari guides. All while staying in comfortable safari lodges and keeping costs down.
What do comfortable safaris cost, and what’s included?
Classic safari costs vary throughout the year, but reckon on low season rates of approximately USD3,000–4,500 per week per person sharing in low season, rising to USD4,000–5,500 in high season.
Your accommodation will often be in great locations, including gems like the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania or the banks of the mighty Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. You’ll generally stay in larger lodges or hotels; you may forgo some of the finer frills, but you’ll always be comfortable in your en-suite room or tent.
Dining will be communal, and activities will be shared; you’ll find this is a wonderful way to get to know fellow safari lovers. Laundry and drinks are likely to be the only extras.
How do you get around on a comfortable safari? Is the itinerary set?
There are two options here: we can tailor-make an itinerary for you, or we can offer you an organised tour that’s best for you.
A personalised itinerary allows you to choose exactly what you’d like to do and where you’d like to go. Typically, you’ll be driven from one remote wilderness area to the next in safari vehicles kitted out for your comfort, but you’ll be able to include the odd flight too. The flexibility of this option puts it at the higher end of the comfortable safari price range.
Organised tours are group safaris with set itineraries and departure dates, typically leaving weekly. They’re sold on a per-seat basis – also in well-equipped safari vehicles – but your temporary tribe won’t ever consist of more than six or seven people, plus a safari guide. The entire safari will be an exciting road trip, allowing for uninterrupted, on-the-ground safari action, but everyone gets a window seat, allowing for equal photographic and viewing opportunities for all. This is the most affordable option, and it makes for easy holiday planning.
