Chobe Savanna Lodge | Eastern Caprivi Luxury Caprivi Safari Lodge

Chobe Savanna Lodge offers a different perspective to properties on the opposing Botswana bank, yet the focus is still on the water activities that bring the Chobe to life. Here your view is of the Puku Flats, which take their name from the herds of eponymous antelope that can be seen from the open-sided main area of this luxury Namibia safari lodge.

The place

The flatness of the terrain around Chobe Savanna Lodge is in distinct contrast to our spirits, which we can feel rising as soon as we arrive. Our kids – never short of energy – seem to receive an additional boost from the sheer scale of the landscape. We gaze across the seemingly endless floodplain, our eyes pulled in different directions by small knots of puku antelope, or giant birds striding along in the shallows. With Chobe Savanna Lodge being located on a peninsula of Namibian land feeling its way out into the Chobe River, we have a sense both of glorious isolation and of being connected to something larger. This could of course be due to the fact that our own small herd has arrived in the centre of some of Africa’s greatest concentrations of game – especially buffalo and elephant. The absence of limits as to how far we can see creates a feeling of infinite possibilities: this is a stage on which anything might happen. The call of a fish eagle brings me back from my temporary reverie, and I turn my attention to our new home.

The room

Our family unit – one of three family accommodation options at this luxury Namibia safari lodge – has two separate bedrooms. It strikes the perfect balance between privacy and reassurance – not that our kids seem in any way perturbed at suddenly finding themselves in the middle of uncharted Africa. Our youngest, still only seven, is delightedly rummaging through the contents of the Safari Bag she was presented with when we arrived, and I’m bracing myself for lots of questions! Luckily our guide clearly has a real rapport with children, and he pauses frequently during his description of the room’s amenities to casually drop astounding wildlife facts into the conversation. There’s a delicious coolness inside our family unit, despite the heat outside. I realise that it’s thanks to the thatch roof, just one example of the attention to detail that combines with the rustic charm of our new home to make it feel as though it were built specially for us. I really do mean to spend more time looking at the decor and furniture, but the floodplain views through the full-length mesh panels are a terrible distraction

What sets it apart

Chobe Savanna Lodge, unlike some of the other luxury Namibia safari lodges on our itinerary, is very much focused on water activities. This makes perfect sense, given that the Chobe River is the dominant feature in the landscape, and the main reason we can see so much game without even leaving the lodge. After several days of game drives, we know that we’re going to enjoy the change of pace and locomotion of spending time on the river. Being made to feel genuinely welcome as a family is a wonderful sensation – meeting our guide immediately convinces me that our kids will have a lot of fun here, as well as learning a great deal. Education disguised as play: I couldn’t approve more!

When to Go

The dry Southern African winter is the most popular season for Caprivi safaris, due to the classic combination of game concentrated around diminishing water sources, vegetation that has receded like a hairline, making viewing easier, and generally mild (but warm) weather. Rain is unlikely although not impossible. The banks of the Chobe River are thronged with thirsty animals towards the end of this period (just before the summer rains), while fishing is generally best when the water levels are reduced.

With fewer summer visitors, both availability and rates at luxury Namibia safari lodges are generally improved. The Eastern Caprivi is at its greenest and most beautiful during and just after the summer rains, although resurgent vegetation may screen sightings of some smaller creatures. Many species synchronise births with the onset of the rains, meaning more social and predator interactions during the green season.
