Camp Moremi, one of Botswana’s best safari lodges, takes its name from the game reserve in which it’s situated, and ultimately from the visionary chief who first declared this a protected area. Staying here allows you to benefit from his far-sighted decision, just as the wildlife itself does.

The place
It’s the greenness of Camp Moremi that strikes me first: we’re surrounded by vivid, emerald shades that belong to trees and plants that seem to grow even as I look at them – or perhaps it’s just that they’re dancing in the cool breeze blowing across Xaxanaka Lagoon. Our light aircraft flight to ‘Camp M’ gives us a chance to view the tapestry of woodland, savannah, waterways and floodplains from above, and now we’re among them. The camp itself is the perfect example of this variety, as it’s located within a copse of riverine trees along the edge of the lagoon. We take a few moments to drink in the view, which alters as light and shadows play across it. We walk down to the fire deck, where the neatly raked sand awaits the evening campfire, and we know that by then we’ll already have some wonderful Camp Moremi stories to share. Just a metre or so above the ground, gazing out across both land and water, we’re filled with a sense of the almost limitless potential of Moremi Game Reserve to astonish and delight us.

The room
Our room is short stroll away, along an elevated wooden walkway. Before we arrive, we see two species of bird that are new to us, and I make a mental note to tick them off my list. Before that, however, comes the even more important business of exploring our new home. My partner delights in the diaphanous mosquito net – tied up during the day, we’re assured that the housekeeper will lower it for us later, not that there seem to be many insects around at all. Feeding just a few metres away, a red lechwe seems to share our surprise at this. He stares for a moment, then splashes away through the shallow water. I love how every piece of furniture in the room points towards the view – no matter where I sit, I can see out from beneath the thatched roof. Our room is comfortable without being ostentatious; indeed, the neutral colours seem to have been chosen to prevent us being distracted from what’s happening outside.

What sets it apart
The location of this luxury Botswana safari lodge sets it apart from other lodges that we’ve visited. It sits astride the place where land and water come together, and this is reflected in the choice of land- and water-based activities available. I know from experience that my partner loves to get out on the water, while I’m a more terrestrial creature. At Camp Moremi, it’s clear that we’ll both be more than content. This area has a reputation for phenomenal game-viewing, with its unique variety of habitats meaning that almost every species that makes the Okavango Delta its home can be found here. Camp Moremi is a true hidden gem, and one that requires no polishing. It’s able to be all things to all safari-goers, and every facet of the experience reflects the beauty and diversity of the Okavango.

When to Go
This is peak safari season – and, from end July, peak flood season. The in-creeping waters, which fall as rain in Angola in the previous summer – bring new life to northern Botswana. Confusingly, you’ll see much more water in this cooler, drier season. Fresh early mornings and evenings pair with warm days for a pleasant winter climate, and the encroaching waters reduce the land available, concentrating the wildlife. Animals are also easier to spot, as the vegetation recedes due to lack of rain. Water-based activities complement the more conventional game drives and guided walks, especially when the water depth peaks.
Botswana’s summer or green season is traditionally quieter, meaning you’re even more likely to have pristine swathes of wilderness to yourself. As the heat builds up, so too do the clouds, resulting in short but sharp afternoon electric storms. The bush bursts into life almost overnight: plants grow rapidly, many baby animals are born (and many are taken by predators) and migratory birds arrive en masse. As the flood recedes, floodplains become accessible again, expanding the reach of game drives. It’s a busy time for the wildlife, and a beautiful time to visit.
