The place

From Sirikoi House, I gaze over the waterhole, which is fed from a natural spring where animals frequently come to wallow and drink. I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement – with exceptional staff taking care of everything, I can let go and enjoy the experience of being here, surrounded by rolling hills and the distant Mount Kenya, while the endless plains of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy beg to be explored. I venture out to the deck, glancing around Sirikoi House’s spacious open-air living and dining area, set on the extensive lawns of Sirikoi Camp. Although we’re completely self-contained, the camp is a short distance away should we wish to socialise. As I sip my drink, I’m taken aback when a giraffe wanders past, followed closely by my wide-eyed daughter! Watching my son running after them yelling with excitement, I smile benignly. For once I don’t have to worry about noise!

I venture out to the deck, glancing around Sirikoi House’s spacious open-air living and dining area, set on the extensive lawns of Sirikoi Camp. Although we’re completely self-contained, the camp is a short distance away should we wish to socialise. As I sip my drink, I’m taken aback when a giraffe wanders past, followed closely by my wide-eyed daughter! Watching my son running after them yelling with excitement, I smile benignly. For once I don’t have to worry about noise!

The rooms

I lie across our plush bed, appreciating the fragrance of the freshly cut flowers sitting next to the fireplace; it still hasn’t sunk in that my partner and I have the master cottage and its claw-foot bathtub, twin sinks and outdoor shower all to ourselves. Although it’s physically spacious, the kind of space we’re relishing is the sensation of being a couple on a romantic getaway, when our kids are actually just next door – enjoying their own space in their two-bedroomed cottage, no doubt! Just as I’m thinking this, my youngest comes bursting in after a swim, grinning from ear to ear and jumping (wetly) on the bed. I grin back, happy to have this happy balance of couple time and family time. We chat for a while, guessing at the origins of the various exotic items decorating the cottage. My son’s stomach interrupts us with its rumbling, as growing boys’ bellies tend to do, so we make a beeline for the dining cottage, where our telepathic private chef is already preparing us a meal. My partner and I share this responsibility at home, but even so it’s a joy to hand it over entirely, knowing that everyone’s dietary needs and preferences are being catered for.

And while we joined them on game drives, horse riding and forest visits, we had plenty of time for ourselves too.
