Sirikoi House | Family Safari | Lewa Conservancy One Of Kenya’s Best Private Kenya Safari Houses

Nestled in a shady acacia forest overlooking a waterhole, Sirikoi House is a private Kenya safari house with its own chef, guide and safari vehicle. Comprised of two cottages, a family can enjoy all the wonderful activities together, but have enough space and privacy to unwind without crowding each other. It’s one of Kenya’s best safari accommodation options.

The place

From Sirikoi House, I gaze over the waterhole, which is fed from a natural spring where animals frequently come to wallow and drink. I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement – with exceptional staff taking care of everything, I can let go and enjoy the experience of being here, surrounded by rolling hills and the distant Mount Kenya, while the endless plains of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy beg to be explored. I venture out to the deck, glancing around Sirikoi House’s spacious open-air living and dining area, set on the extensive lawns of Sirikoi Camp. Although we’re completely self-contained, the camp is a short distance away should we wish to socialise. As I sip my drink, I’m taken aback when a giraffe wanders past, followed closely by my wide-eyed daughter! Watching my son running after them yelling with excitement, I smile benignly. For once I don’t have to worry about noise!

The rooms

I lie across our plush bed, appreciating the fragrance of the freshly cut flowers sitting next to the fireplace; it still hasn’t sunk in that my partner and I have the master cottage and its claw-foot bathtub, twin sinks and outdoor shower all to ourselves. Although it’s physically spacious, the kind of space we’re relishing is the sensation of being a couple on a romantic getaway, when our kids are actually just next door – enjoying their own space in their two-bedroomed cottage, no doubt! Just as I’m thinking this, my youngest comes bursting in after a swim, grinning from ear to ear and jumping (wetly) on the bed. I grin back, happy to have this happy balance of couple time and family time. We chat for a while, guessing at the origins of the various exotic items decorating the cottage. My son’s stomach interrupts us with its rumbling, as growing boys’ bellies tend to do, so we make a beeline for the dining cottage, where our telepathic private chef is already preparing us a meal. My partner and I share this responsibility at home, but even so it’s a joy to hand it over entirely, knowing that everyone’s dietary needs and preferences are being catered for.

What sets it apart

The family-couple dichotomy is not the only happy medium at Sirikoi House, there’s also a wonderful balance of absolute comfort and a warm, welcoming ambiance that makes you feel completely at home. High attention to detail, excellent food and friendly staff make your stay here blissfully worry-free, leaving you to simply unwind and enjoy. As a family-run and family-friendly establishment, the lodge ensures families are well taken care of – we all loved the organic vegetable garden and choosing our fresh produce for lunch, which was predictably delicious. The kids collected eggs from the free-range hens (even though they’re a little old for that!), got to know the friendly resident giraffe and spent hours with our guide, learning how to make bows and arrows and identify wildlife tracks and signs. And while we joined them on game drives, horse riding and forest visits, we had plenty of time for ourselves too.

When to Go

This is prime time for a safari in northern Kenya. The weather is dry and cool, making conditions perfect in this arid part of the country. It’s just after the long rains, so while the bush is initially lush it gets progressively sparser, making wildlife easier to spot. A trip to northern Kenya at this time of year is best combined with a visit to the Masai Mara, where you’ll be able to see the Great Wildebeest Migration from July to September.

In this period following the short rains, the dry season takes hold and the vegetation thins out completely. The animals congregate near water sources – particularly the Ngiro River, which makes its way from the Laikipia highlands to Samburu and beyond – so the game viewing is excellent, plus there are fewer people around to share your sightings with. To round off your safari experience, visit Tanzania now too, where you’ll catch the southern Serengeti leg of the Great Wildebeest Migration, as well as the wildebeest’s dramatic birthing season.

Kenya’s long rains, which fall steadily throughout April and May, are followed by short rains in November – generally quick afternoon bursts. While muddy roads can make getting around a bit tricky, the drier north is the best place to be in Kenya at this time of year. It’s a quiet time for tourism, so wildlife experiences are exclusive, and as the vegetation is in a growth period, game sightings are plentiful. All in all visitors get good-value holidays now, provided they pack their sense of humour (and their gum boots!).
