Owing to its mottled coat, the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is also known as the painted hunting dog or painted wolf. Unfortunately these beautiful creatures are endangered, their biggest threats being humans, viral diseases, habitat loss and competition with larger predators. Happily you can still find them in the safari destinations of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania.
