While you were on safari, you might have seen an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) throwing sand over itself – or rolling around on the ground – and wondered what it was doing. This is called dust or sand bathing, and many birds and animals do it as a way of ridding themselves of parasites. You can find African elephant in the safari destinations of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa.
