On arrival at Dar es Salaam International Airport, you will have a quick chance to refresh before catching your connecting flight to Ruaha Airstrip, where you will be welcomed and briefed on the surrounding area en-route to camp. On arrival, you will get the opportunity to settle in, unwind and freshen up before heading to the dining tent for a delicious three-course meal. You will then head to the camp area for an after-dinner drink while tales of old times are being told.

Rise and shine to the sounds of the African bush. Depending on your preference, there are a couple of options with regards to how your day is structured. One choice is to break camp early and head out with a picnic breakfast on a morning game drive, returning to camp in time for lunch. Relax around camp in the afternoon and enjoy dinner, prepared by the local chef. End off you day sitting around the campfire, sharing stories of the day.

Today, again, you can choose what to do. You could wake up to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in camp, enjoying the camp’s facilities and reading. Perhaps later, head out with a picnic lunch on an afternoon game drive, returning in the mid-afternoon. Relax, dine and end the day off around the campfire.

After breakfast, depart Kwihala Camp and head to Msembe Airstrip for your light-aircraft flight to the nearby Selous Game Reserve. You will be met and be given an introduction to this beautiful reserve and its wildlife on the way to camp. Settle into your spacious tent; after lunch, there’s time to relax by the pool before you set off on your afternoon safari activity. A boat safari is a lovely relaxed introduction to the Selous, and will offer a real contrast to your time in Ruaha, watching wildlife come to the water’s edge to drink and stopping for sundowners on a sandbank.

Each morning and afternoon you can choose from the safari activities on offer. Today a game drive may catch your fancy, a good way of exploring further afield and seeing the larger wildlife and predators. The Selous is home to a superb variety of wildlife, including good populations of lion and leopard, and Africa’s largest population of wild dog.

Perhaps a walking safari is your choice of activity this morning, a real treat offering a slower pace to learn about the flora and fauna of the Selous. Boat safaris on the lake are particularly lovely in the afternoon, combined with a spot of fishing or sundowners, and offer a good chance of getting up close to pods of hippos and bird colonies nesting on small islands.

After breakfast, depart camp and make your way to Mbuyu Airstrip. Here you will bid farewell to the bush as you board your flight to Zanzibar. On arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, you will be met and transferred by road to Matemwe Lodge in the northeast of the island. Settle in and while away some time on your private verandah, furnished with large hammocks and sofas, watching as the occasional dhow drifts past in the distance.

Choose to relax beside the smaller infinity pool enjoying views over the ocean, or head to the larger pool area which leads off the main bar – ideal for families. Explore the coral reef and its rock pools during low tide or take a kayak for a leisurely paddle to explore the island coastline. For an additional cost, sail off on a traditional dhow or snorkel and dive the pristine Mnemba Atoll.
